In a previous post titled  “Solar Energy Industry Looking Bright for Veterans”  we uncovered a press release by the White House that states, “During the next decade, the solar industry is slated to grow even more. The next generation of skilled professionals will be key to the industry’s effort to meet the demand for this clean, renewable energy. That’s why the Energy Department is launching a pilot solar installation training program to provide military veterans who are transitioning out of active duty with the skills needed to become the leaders of the nation’s clean energy economy.”

At G.I. Jobs, we have several solar energy careers for veterans. To see open positions please visit our Job Board For Veterans.

According to the Department of Energy, the sun can provide a year’s worth of energy for the entire Earth in just an hour of shining on our happy little faces. What’s great is that you can harness that burning ball of flame for a career and not even have to miss your vitamin D dose in a classroom getting a degree.

Check out some of our favorite solar energy careers for veterans below!

Solar Photovoltaic Installer

Homes and businesses are increasingly looking to create green buildings and the installation of solar panels are a big part of creating an Earth-friendly energy source. Solar photovoltaic installers plan, prepare and install the solar panels required to collect and convert solar energy. It helps to have a background in construction, but it’s not necessary. There are several paths to become an installer, including apprenticeships and certifications. According to the Department of Labor, you can expect $30k to $40k starting out.

Site Assessors

Taking stock in the capabilities and output of an already installed panel system, site assessors can determine if it is working at its utmost potential. They can also make recommendations on the specifics of an installation, including its layout and materials. These individuals work hand-in-hand with developers and construction. A background in construction or electrical work is helpful if you are interested in becoming a site assessor.

Solar Power Manufacturing

Each cell requires a careful and invested hand in its manufacturing. Whether you’re interested in concentrated solar power, photovoltaic solar power or the increasingly popular solar water heating systems, each component has a beginning. If you enjoy working with your hands in an industry that promotes the environment, the world of solar power manufacturing has many opportunities. Salaries for these positions range anywhere from $27k to $97k for floor operations, skilled vocational positions and management.

From working with the end product to ensure durability to operating sophisticated computer systems to create these state-of-the-art green products, you might be surprised that your military experience may have already given you some of the needed skills. Those with backgrounds in electrical and welding are particularly useful.

Like many careers that focus on vocational experience over a degree, the best advice for a newbie is on-the-job training. If you come in with little to no experience, knowing where to get your foot in the door with the right company may be the chance for a solar career to take off. Look for employers that specialize in solar installation or manufacturing and you might find the beginning of your next good decision.
