Are you heading to college for the first time? Since you’re transitioning from the military, you’re already a pro at being prepared. Here are our top five picks for must-have supplies.
1. The right books
You’re time in the armed forces taught you the importance of having the right supplies. Having the right books for your classes is just like that. Make sure to snag a book list from your college bookstore or your class instructor so you can be sure you have all the books you need. Consider buying books used or renting textbooks to save some cash. BookRenter is a good website to check out. Even Barnes & Noble has a textbook rental option. Remember, if you’re using the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you’ll get $1,000 a year for books and supplies. Spend it wisely.
2. Student planner/calendar
You’re a pro at strategizing and planning ahead. Carry that skill over to college with the help of a good student planner or calendar. With college classes come lots of deadlines, so a student planner or calendar will help keep you organized and on top of your work. Marking out in advance when things are due for each of your classes will make it easier to plan your workload.
3. Laptop or access to a computer/printer
With classes come papers. Access to a laptop or computer, as well as a printer, is important when heading to college in the fall. If you don’t have the cash to buy your own, be sure to find out where the library and/or computer lab is on campus. Find out when they are open and if there is a charge for using the printer.
4. Pens, papers and highlighters
Just like back in the day when you were in elementary school, you will still need the basics—pens, notebooks and highlighters.
5. Something to cram everything into
Now you just need something to carry all this stuff in. Having a backpack or some type of bag to carry everything will come in handy. It doesn’t have to be fancy or even brand new, just something that will get the job done.
Being prepared and strategizing are two skills you are already a pro at. Carry those skills over to campus with these top five must-have supplies.
