The ISSA College of Exercise Science, a distance education institution, has changed its name to Lionel University. The name change is part of the school’s transformation into a full-fledged university. The change will take place during the last quarter of 2021, with the institution officially operating fully under the name of Lionel University beginning on Jan. 1, 2022.
Under its new name, Lionel University will continue its singular focus on exercise science. While many universities offer exercise science degrees, Lionel is the only university that was founded by fitness professionals, for fitness professionals. Lionel’s curriculum is developed and honed by seasoned fitness professionals with decades of experience and taught by a team of engaging faculty, many of whom are Master Trainers who have been working in health and fitness for years.
Lionel University is a designated Military Friendly® School, working hard to help active duty service members and veterans achieve their education goals. Programs are specifically designed to be flexible so that coursework can be easily managed during service. The Military Friendly® Schools list is based on public data sources for nearly 9,000 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and survey responses. Just 8% of these schools earned the designation in 2021-2022.
Lionel’s Military Tuition Assistance guide addresses questions about how to utilize military benefits at the school. Military specialists on staff understand the ins and outs of branch-specific TA, veterans benefits, MyCAA, and combinations thereof. Prospective students can discuss their goals and challenges to receive guidance on available options and how to get started.
“As part of our growth as an academic institution, we’re becoming a university and adopting the name Lionel University,” said Alex Hoffmann, President and Chief Academic Officer. “Our transformation into Lionel University allows us to provide a greater array of program offerings and degree levels, which meet the needs of students, alumni, the health, fitness, and wellness industries, and the clients our graduates serve.”
The change is reflected in the name only, as Lionel will continue to operate the same way, with all faculty and staff remaining in place. In addition:
- Current coursework won’t change
- Funding sources and benefits students use to pay tuition remain unchanged
- The school’s accreditation remains the same
- There will be no changes to functionality, as all programs will continue to be offered virtually through the Canvas online learning platform
“As with any change we make, we do so with our students top of mind,” Hoffmann said. “This change benefits the students first and foremost, as it allows us to offer them even more options, while helping us collectively better fulfill our mission of creating a stronger, healthier world.”
Lionel University makes it easy to get started, with no cost to apply and no textbooks required, as all course material is made available online at no additional cost. The action-oriented curriculum is developed and honed by seasoned fitness professionals with decades of experience and taught by a team of engaging faculty committed to helping students succeed in the fitness profession.
