Military Service: Staff Sergeant, Air Force (2004-2012)

Specialty Code: Aircrew Flight Equipment (1T171)

What do you do?

I manage drivers by relaying load assignment information using the AS400 system, Omnitracs satellite system, face-to-face communication and phone conversation. I ensure they are getting paid, getting miles and getting routed home.

How’d you get that job?

I attended a job fair and gave my résumé to Werner. A couple months later, I got a phone call from Werner. I visited their global headquarters, shadowed a fleet manager, interviewed for the job and was hired the next day. My skills managing aircraft, life-saving equipment and subordinates helped me obtain a position managing drivers.

Coolest thing about your job?

I enjoy communicating and interacting with drivers, getting to know them and finding out about their backgrounds.

Best advice?

Ensure your military experience and skills are expressed and presented in a way a civilian employer can understand. Keep your mind open to different career paths you may not have previously considered. Don’t be afraid to network, attend job fairs or ask your state’s Department of Labor for assistance, because they have veteran service representatives there to help.
