Tell us about yourself:

Duquesne University actively adopts a community that supports and enriches military students.   I received more assistance from Duquesne in resolving payment issues than I did from Veteran’s Affairs.

What prompted you to return to school?

I always had the desire to return to school, but didn’t have the time or money.  While attending a soldier professional development assembly it was presented that I could attend Duquesne University at a very low cost and receive a Master’s degree.  I definitely had to take advantage of the opportunity.  Being assigned to a military counselor also had its own advantages.  She understood how I could be ‘called-up’ and may be unavailable for extended periods and worked as a liaison with my instructors .

What military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, did you use?

I utilized the Tuition Assistance which covered all of my tuition and 85% of all other expenses including books and graduation fees.

What has your experience been like as a student?

I had the greatest experience at Duquesne University.  It is an extremely military friendly environment and the staff and faculty made the application and admissions processes painless.

What challenges did you have adjusting to campus culture after military life?

I am used to traditional learning environment or ‘face-to-face’ classroom learning.  It was a huge bonus that Duquesne offered both lecture and on-line services.  Although I prefer the classroom environment it was nice to have the option of continuing my education while abroad.

Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student?

I can’t say that being in the Army made me a better student however, being a student at Duquesne has made me a better person.

What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?

Relax!  It will be fine.  The military has instilled a must do attitude in you, and you’ve learned the importance of teamwork.  So relax and give it a chance and you’ll learn more about yourself as a person.
