Tell us about yourself:
I’m from Missouri and have been a welder for over 15 years. I served in the military from 1994-2007, where I was deployed 5 times, including Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m currently in the National Guard.
What prompted you to return to school?
When I was at the end of my enlistment, I considered nursing or veterinary medicine. Later on I heard about welding, and I thought, my uncle is a welder, I’ll ask him about it. But, he told me welding was a “man’s job,” and so I wanted to prove him wrong.
Why did you choose Central Texas College?
I knew I needed higher ed to succeed in welding and so I looked to CTC because they have a good welding program. At CTC I could get the skills I needed to advance.
What has your experience been like as a student?
CTC has great welding classes and there’s definitely the opportunity to advance myself. I’m in my next to last class, and then I will have my associate in welding.
Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student?
Yes.
What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?
No one can stop you from doing what you want to do. No one can take your education from you. You’re the only one that can make things happen. Not anyone else. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.
