You might’ve never wondered who looks out for the conditioning of astronauts, because why would you? Most of us have some kind of vague idea that people who fly into space have to endure physical conditions that are much more strenuous than the rest of us, but if you asked me to design a workout regimen for a recently returned astronaut dealing with the effects of bone density loss and muscular atrophy due to six months of sustained microgravity, I’d be clueless.

Lots of eight counts? Arm circles? I don’t know.

That’s why it’s a good thing that NASA hires and trains people who know about this kind of thing. We’re not talking about the guy at your gym who gets paid 20 bucks an hour to shout energy drink slogans at you while you run on the treadmill.

These are the experts in how the human body works, people with lots of degrees and lots of experience. So being a PT leader in the military probably isn’t going to cut it by itself, but it might give you a leg up in the long run. After all, astronauts are just people too. Who says they don’t need motivational PT slogans shouted at them when they get back?
