Bugs and criminal investigations don’t seem to have much to do with each other at first. But if you’re a forensic entomologist or (like me) have read Silence of the Lambs, you know that insects can also be an invaluable source of insight for law enforcement agencies.

I won’t go too far into the details here, because bugs and dead bodies are gross, but evidently there are many ways that insects can help solve murders.

There’s also the more mundane kinds of jobs, like providing evidence for lawsuits involving appetizing subjects such as finding insects in food, or bug infestations in apartment buildings.

Most people find that kind of job less than appealing, but perhaps you’ve spent your military career in security and maybe thought to yourself “NCIS is nice, but I sure wish the cockroaches I dealt with could help solve crimes.” If so, get out there, use that GI Bill for a biology/forensics double major and please go do the job that the rest of us wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot science pole.
