Jazmin McBride’s top concern when she decided to pursue a college degree was maintaining her financial stability. But she also had a lot to learn about the benefits she earned in the Air Force Reserve.

Paying It Forward. McBride, 26, is working on a master’s degree in social work. As she does, she is able to apply her knowledge of military benefits to help other student veterans at the City University of New York (CUNY), where she works as a special project assistant and liaison in the Central Office of Veteran Affairs. “CUNY is home to more than 3,000 student veterans, so I strive to make changes in policy and encourage the standardization of best practices across the university for every student veteran,” she says.

Military Matters. Part of the challenge is educating civilians on military issues, not easy considering less than 1 percent of the U.S. population currently serves in uniform. “I think there needs to be more focus on Military Cultural Competency (MCC ),” she says. “Too many civilians are clueless about what veterans, active duty service members, reservists and family members encounter post-deployment.”

Double Duty. McBride started out in the VA’s work-study program as an intern to help defray the tuition her military benefits didn’t cover. As a reservist, she was eligible for only 40 percent of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. She used Pell Grants, tuition assistance and the work-study program to make up the difference.

Ask Lots of Questions. To educate herself about her military education benefits, McBride visited the education office on her base and asked a lot of questions. She urges service members preparing to use their GI Bill to do the same. “Don’t be afraid to major in something you will enjoy, even if it’s different,” she says.[/fusion_text][/fullwidth]
