There’s no magic formula for making a smooth transition from the military to a meaningful civilian career. Thousands of veterans struggle to find their dream career, and some never do. While there’s no silver bullet to slay the transition monster, there is a line of logic to apply. Put simply, a service member must determine what they’d love to do for the rest of their life, then determine what training, education and/or experience they need to make it happen. Oversimplified? Sure. But that simple logic can go a long way in mapping out your post-military career plan.
To help apply that logic, we publish Military Friendly’s® annual list of Hot Degrees for Veterans. The list is straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth: the 2019 Military Friendly® Employers (MFEs). The Military Friendly® team asks each MFE to list the degrees, credentials and certifications they most often require for candidates seeking the top jobs they recruit military and veterans for (see the Top 25 Hot Jobs for Veterans list in the April issue of G.I. Jobs at GIJobs.com/digimag, or find it online at GIJobs.com).
Deciding what school – and what kind of school – you want to attend is important. But what’s even more crucial is what program you pursue. Research by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) reinforces the importance of choosing the right program. “What students study is more important than where they study it. That’s why some workers with less education earn more than those with a bachelor’s degree,” said Anthony Carnevale, CEW founder and director. If your dream lies among the degrees, credentials and certifications found on the following pages, you’re in luck. They all represent a path to the hottest jobs the 226 Military Friendly® Employers are recruiting veterans for in 2019, and many of those careers come with attractive salaries and solid job growth projections. Computer-related education, for example, is well represented on the list, as well as business and human resources.
The Hot Degrees for Veterans list, which includes credentials and certifications for those whose career goals don’t require a four-year or advanced degree, is organized into four categories: bachelor’s degrees, advanced degrees, professional credentials and certificates. Each category includes 10 degrees, certificates or licenses with a description of the program from the National Center for Education Statistics.
Finding your passion is the first step. Determining what education or training you need to get there is the next critical step. Use the 2019 Hot Degrees for Veterans to help map your course.
Reverse Engineering
Faulconer figured what he wanted to do, then determined what education he needed to get there. Coming up with a solid plan is critical to post-military success. This generation of service members has access to excellent education benefits, and using them to their advantage can mean the difference between a dead-end civilian job and a career they love.
Every year we publish the Hot Degrees for Veterans list to help with this process. The list includes credentials like certifications and licenses for those whose career goals don’t require a four-year or advanced degree, or whose career might be enhanced by other credentials. The list is organized into four categories: bachelor’s degrees, advanced degrees, professional credentials and certificates. Each category includes 10 degrees, certificates or licenses with a description of the program from the National Center for Education Statistics.

How We Determine the Hot Degrees for Veterans
Each year the Military Friendly® team asks the Military Friendly® Employers to identify the top 10 jobs they are recruiting veterans for. That data is used to compile the annual Top
25 Hot Jobs for Veterans list (If you missed this year’s list, visit GIJobs.com or read the digital version of the April issue. Then they ask the Military Friendly® Employers to identify the top degrees and other credentials they look for when recruiting veterans for their top jobs. The results are used to compile the Hot Degrees for Veterans.
The Military Friendly® Employers ratings are determined through the evaluation of public and proprietary data gathered through the annual Military Friendly® survey process. Scoring is fully automated. For details, visit militaryfriendly.com/methodology.
Bachelor’s Degrees
There’s been much discussion lately about the skyrocketing cost of college and the extraordinary amount of student debt. In the fourth quarter of 2018, borrowers owed a cumulative $1.56 trillion in student loans.
If you are fully eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you could earn a college degree with little or no debt. That’s a big advantage of having served your nation. Still, you need to carefully weigh if a four-year bachelor’s degree is worth your hard-earned GI Bill and four years of study. College is not for everyone, and you can certainly begin a good career with vocational training, apprenticeships and other less expensive and time-consuming methods. If the career you crave, however, is best entered with a bachelor’s degree in hand, then consider the hottest degrees listed by the 2019 Military Friendly® Employers.

Advanced Degrees
Your dream career as a civilian may require you to earn an advanced degree. Or maybe your research indicated that being armed with a graduate degree would give you an advantage over other candidates, or more earning power. As with a bachelor’s degree, it’s important to carefully weigh the pros and cons. Even if you are eligible for 100 percent of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you may have used your benefits to obtain a bachelor’s degree. This means you will rely on scholarships, loans and out-of-pocket expenses to fund your graduate education.
Reed Hayes, the former Green Beret who’s on the cover of this issue, will graduate from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management this month with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. He advises veterans to do their homework before committing to business school. “Stop and think about the financial costs of going to business school,” he says. “Figure out how much debt you are going to have at graduation and ensure that the job you are looking for post-MBA will allow you to pay off that debt in a reasonable amount of time. Don’t spend the money on an MBA if you could get the job now without it.” Here are the advanced degrees that are most in-demand with the 2019 Military Friendly® Employers.
Consider your course carefully.

Certificates
Certification is another way of verifying an individual’s qualifications and competency in a given subject. Typically less advanced and rigorous to obtain than credentials such as licenses, certificates nonetheless offer validation of an individual’s knowledge and qualifications in a particular subject. Certification is awarded by an issuing agency that can objectively quantify that the individual is qualified to perform a job or task. You can get started in some careers with appropriate certification. The CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification, for example, is a globally recognized certification in IT security that can get you started down this career path.
