Building a new database to track and maintain equipment that streamlined efficiency that is still used long after my separation.
Why did you decide to go to college?
Higher education has always been a goal and I will be the first graduate in my immediate family.
Why did you choose Queens College?
Its location would allow me to become more familiar with New York City while being able to live with family in Long Island. It would also allow me to take full advantage of the GI Bill with no cost to me.
How did you decide which degree to pursue?
I assessed my own interests and strengths.
Are you using the GI Bill?
Yes, Chapter 33.
Does it cover all of your expenses?
Yes.
Did you have any difficulty adjusting to campus culture?
At first, yes. But as the veteran community grew and built up at my college, it became easier as I became more involved.
Was it challenging attending classes with 18- to 20-year-old civilian students?
At times it tested my patience, but it opens discourse to more perspectives.
Are there any blunders you would urge service members transitioning to a post-military education to avoid?
Do not depend on the GI bill to be a valid source of income for housing. It is untaxed and will not be taken into consideration.
What is your best advice for such transitioning service members?
Do everything ahead of time, ask questions and reach out to fellow veterans on campus.
