You’ve just landed a new job or are starting in a new position with your current employer. Networking is a great way to meet new co-workers and can help you out in different situations.
Here are our top four on-the-job connections you should make.
1. Mentor
During your time in the military, there was most likely a person you looked up, a mentor of sorts. In the civilian job sector, it can be just as helpful to seek out a mentor. Find someone knowledgeable, helpful and willing to help guide you in a new position or new job field.
2. Helpful co-worker
A second on-the-job connection to make is a helpful co-worker. Like a mentor, this person will be a good ally to have when you need additional support as you learn your way around a new job. Just like your time in the armed forces, it can be overwhelming in the civilian job sector. Having a comrade will go a long way to helping you feel at ease.
3. Human resource manager
One of the best on-the-job connections you can make is with a human resource manager or representative. As with life in the armed forces, there are many protocols and benefits to keep track off. Having a “go-to” person who can help you navigate and answer your questions can save you much time and frustration down the line.
4. Supervisor
Connecting with your supervisor is also an important on-the-job connection. You don’t have to be best friends with your boss, but forming a working relationship is important. It will make work smoother and make the quality of life in the civilian job sector easier.
Navigating the civilian job sector is a bit like navigating life in the armed forces — finding the right support is key.
